I am considering buying a friends 1989 john deere 870 4wd tractor, but it was overheated and now has a great deal of blowby. He says it is not useable as is. Can I get by by just replaceing the pistons sleeves and rings, or is their something else to watch out for??? I am used to working on IH TD9 crawlers that would crack a head if you looked at it wrong, and I was wondering if head cracking was a problem on the Yanmar engine, or if there is a place other than the dealer to get parts. ( I have not seen the tractor yet as it is 4 hours away...that is next weekends project) Bill

Any time an engine is roasted, a cracked head is a possibility. However if it is not loosing coolant or pressurizing the cooling system with compression, it may be OK. If you are lucky, a re-ringing may be all that's required. ....

Consistent with what RickB says, I'd check for coolant in the engine oil, small bubbles in the coolant during operation as well as overheating. I’d make sure the rad cap was good before operating the tractor. I seem to recall somebody saying that cracked heads or bad gaskets can produce white exhaust, but I could be wrong. A difficulty that I'd expect is that you probably wouldn’t know for certain what's wrong without a tear-down. The checks that are reasonable to do while viewing the tractor won't do a very good job of distinguishing between a cracked head and a bad gasket. Likewise, an old trick of pressurizing a cylinder and then listening on the manifolds with a stethoscope for a hiss won't distinguish between something cracked and something warped. With a lot of blow-by, you expect low compression, so a compression test isn't going to reveal much. With an overheated engine, a warped head that produces a bad gasket is quite likely. At any rate, I'd figure that some machining work on the head likely is required, and would factor that along with the sleeving, pistons and rings into what you're willing to pay for the tractor. You might also try to find a used head in a salvage yard as a backup. I'd figure the price of a used head into an offering price as well. I don’t imagine that after-market suppliers for tractor engine parts exist, but I’m often surprised by things. ....

You have hit just about everything you could run into. The head might have problems so as stated earlier go with caution. The engine if it doesn't have a cooling problem now might not have a head problem and it may just be the cylinder area of rings and pistons. ....

Thanks for the input. I will be going to look at the tractor on Saterday (3 hour drive), and will take my cooling system tester (exhaust gas test) and hope it works on diesels.
The local dealer is pricing parts for me as I type so I can have a rough idea of how broke I'm gonna be. One dealer says a factory rebuilt is available (worst case senario), other dealer says nope...no rebuilds available ?????
Will post an update when I know more and if I take the plunge and buy the beast....Thanks again
